Biography
Originally formed in Birmingham, England, under the leadership of guitarist and arranger Grant Kearney, the ensemble first performed as the Sombreros. Their early style drew directly from the vocal-harmony rock & roll pioneered by the Beach Boys and the Four Seasons. A 1966 rechristening as Sight & Sound coincided with a broader stylistic pivot that aligned the group with the emerging psychedelic-pop movement. Rick Price’s arrival the same year prompted Kearney to move to bass, while Price assumed guitar duties and strengthened the vocal blend. During this phase Price and guitarist-singer Mike Sheridan began composing original material, supplying the three singles “Ebenezer,” “Little Jackie Monday,” and “Alley Alley.” Persistent commercial disappointment, including an inability to gain traction in Germany, steered the act toward comedy once Sheridan became a full participant. From 1968 onward the repertoire centered on musical impressions laced with pointed satire. Price later joined the Move, and bassist Kelly Groucutt, a member from 1971 to 1974, moved on to the Electric Light Orchestra in 1974. Sight & Sound persisted until the middle of the decade before disbanding.
