Signing Einstein, a Chicago-rooted adult contemporary rock ensemble, directs its attention toward the creation of elaborate and intellectually engaging compositions. Traces of Berlin and Pink Floyd surface throughout their material, while further inspiration flows from blues, dance, and reggae sources contributed by numerous other artists and groups. Joe Nuccio and Vince Varco resumed their partnership in 1999 after a twelve-year collaborative pause, resolved to produce music free from the dictates of prevailing fashions and unencumbered by live-performance restrictions. Nuccio, who has carried his bass from Anchorage to Los Angeles through countless ensembles, draws frequent comparisons to Roger Waters and Geddy Lee for a technique that supplies seismic low-end force paired with an irresistible dance-inducing groove. Varco, an award-winning multi-instrumentalist anchored in the Chicago scene since the 1980s, furnishes Signing Einstein’s pieces with classically inspired arrangements and expansive walls of sound whose subtle tonal shading yields an enduring musical identity. Gina Gonzalez completes the group as lead vocalist; after Nuccio and Varco had discontinued their pursuit of a male singer, her audition demos revealed an unexpected dimension. Although often likened to Bonnie Raitt and Sarah McLachlan, Gonzalez maintains a singular voice and manner certain to stir audiences. The band’s debut self-titled album, released in spring 2001, enlisted Dave Uhrich and Abdul Hakim on guitar with Randy Harrah on drums, a recording that has received favorable notices from numerous critics.
