Biography
Formed as a U.K. collective that unites Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite with singer/songwriter Elizabeth Elektra, Silver Moth delivers post-rock marked by equal measures of emotional resonance and sweeping scope. The seven-piece group took advantage of pandemic downtime to lay down tracks in the Outer Hebrides, resulting in the 2023 release Black Bay, an album shaped by the enduring allure of the natural world, the fresh bonds among its participants, and material drawn from poetry, mythology, and daily experience.
Silver Moth originated when Elektra first linked with Abrasive Trees guitarist/songwriter Matthew Rochford via social media amid lockdowns for the COVID-19 global pandemic, even joining some of his virtual tai chi classes. Their shared interest in creating music soon expanded to encompass Braithwaite, Rochford's bandmate Steven Hill, Burning House drummer Ash Babb, Prosthetic Head cellist Ben Roberts, singer/songwriter Evi Vine, and composer/multi-instrumentalist Nick Hudson. Following several remote rehearsals, the musicians convened in early 2021 at Black Bay, a studio on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides archipelago; though only Elektra and Braithwaite had previously met face-to-face, the full lineup gathered to work with producer Pete Fletcher and engineer Callum. In just four days they composed and captured their debut album. Issued in April 2023, Black Bay incorporated tributes to departed friends, verses by Rochford's late father, and Inuit mythology within its richly textured, dramatic arrangements.
