Biography
Born on 11 July 1970 in Edinburgh, Scotland, concertina player Thoumire first gained major attention within folk circles by claiming the BBC Radio 2 Young Tradition Award in 1989. The surname, rendered Toomere and tracing its roots to France, belongs to an artist whose approach merges longstanding folk traditions with jazz elements to produce a strikingly distinctive voice. The recording Hootz earned strong approval, a response matched by the subsequent project Devil’s Delight, created alongside Seannachie. Beyond delivering English concertina instruction across the UK and America, Thoumire has performed across the US and Canada while also appearing live throughout Europe and on broadcast outlets. On the album Waltzes For Playboys, the Simon Thoumire Three featured Kevin Mackenzie on guitar and Brian Sheils on bass.
