The indie rock outfit known as Sioux Falls originated during the high school years of guitarist Isaac Eiger and bassist Fred Nixon. Drawing influence from acts such as Modest Mouse and Pixies, these longtime friends developed their melodic post-punk style while performing locally in their native Bozeman, Montana. In 2012, after issuing an independent EP, the duo moved to Portland, Oregon, and added drummer Ben Scott to the lineup. Settled in their new city, they produced two further EPs—Big Krackel in 2013 and Lights Off for Danger in 2014—prior to signing with Broken World Media, an indie label based in Pittsburgh. With this partnership secured, Sioux Falls dedicated 2015 to completing their first full-length effort, Rot Forever, which came out in the first part of 2016. Later that year, the band altered its moniker and transitioned to performing under the name Strange Ranger.
