A soul performer of Caucasian descent, Skip Easterling displayed a strong inclination toward reinterpreting classic blues and rhythm-and-blues numbers. Around 1970, he recorded a standout rendition of Willie Dixon's composition "Hoochie Coochie Man," overseen in production by Huey "Piano" Smith; incorporating flute alongside a groovy rhythmic pulse and supported by a meticulously orchestrated ensemble heavy on brass, this interpretation emerged as wholly innovative and remarkably vibrant. Serving as Easterling's most successful release, the track also marked the final instance of chart success for the Instant Records imprint owned by Joe Banashak.
