Skye Edwards and Ross Godfrey, long recognized as core members of the influential British trip-hop ensemble Morcheeba, launched a separate duo project during 2016. Paul Godfrey, Ross’s older brother and the group’s remaining founder, had already stepped away from live performance for an extended period, which widened the gap between his meticulously layered studio productions and the sound the band could deliver in concert. Prompted by an insight that struck during a festival appearance in 2014, Skye and Ross set out to build a recording endeavor that would align more closely with Morcheeba’s earlier, more unadorned stage presentation. Avoiding synthesizers and commercial facilities altogether, they captured their self-titled debut largely at home, enlisting family members together with Morcheeba keyboardist Richard Milner to form the rhythm section. The resulting work revived the free-ranging sensibility that had first distinguished the band, blending trip-hop, jazz, rock, and soul. Released in 2016 on Cooking Vinyl, the album Skye & Ross was promoted with live dates that mixed the duo’s new songs with longstanding Morcheeba material.
