West London rapper and musician Dan Dare initially built recognition via his behind-the-scenes production contributions before stepping forward with his own recordings issued as Slang. The project fused his songwriting instincts with a grime-tinged rap approach while confronting intimate themes such as mental health struggles and personal isolation. The project’s debut release, the introspective 2016 single “YAY (You Alright, Yeah?),” established this direction through confessional narratives delivered over reflective guitar lines and hard-edged rhythms.

Dare’s earliest performances came under the moniker Brutality within the Gritty Committee, a late-2000s grime crew based in West London. During that same span he refined his production techniques across a decade, earning acclaim for collaborations with artists including Charli XCX, Wiley, and Newton Faulkner. He simultaneously developed personal material and unveiled the Slang persona in 2016, crafting a sound that merged rap with mainstream pop by drawing on his full range of abilities. His songwriting and production expertise combined with an affinity for street rap to shape tracks marked by wistful, nostalgic, and unflinchingly candid atmospheres. The single “YAY (You Alright, Yeah?)” was succeeded by a self-titled four-track EP in 2017. Subsequent material surfaced gradually: the fwENDZ mixtape assembled prior singles, the 2018 EP Terms & Conditions introduced four fresh cuts, and the lighthearted song “Richest Man in the World” appeared during summer 2018.
