Slaraffenland, whose name is pronounced sluh-raf'-in-lund and translates to “land of milk and honey,” originated in Copenhagen as a Danish experimental rock ensemble. Identical twins Christian Taagehøj and Mike Taagehøj joined forces with Bjørn Heebøll, Niklas Antonsson, and Jeppe Skjold to establish the project in 2002. The musicians created their own imprint, Honningmand, which issued their self-titled debut album two years later. An EP titled Jinkatawa appeared in 2005; several months afterward the group traveled to New York and performed at venues such as CBGB’s. American label Hometapes took notice and signed the band in 2006. Slaraffenland came back to appear at the CMJ Music Marathon on November 1 and later performed at the SXSW music conference in March 2007. On June 26 of that year the quintet issued its second full-length release, Private Cinema, through Hometapes.
