Active in San Francisco’s thriving acid jazz community of the 1990s while also pursuing the rawer edges of techno and drum’n’bass, Slide Five comprises brothers John Warrin on guitar and Dave Warrin on keys, together with drummer Guy Gershoni and bassist John Christensen. The quartet formed in 1990, performed regularly across the Bay Area, and laid down tracks from 1992 to 1993 for a cassette intended for sale at shows. After receiving prominent placements on three Ubiquity Records anthologies—Mo’ Cookin’, Still Cookin’, and Is That Jazz?—Slide Five signed to the label in 1995. Rhode Trip, their first release, repurposed material from the independent cassette, while the band’s proper debut, 1997’s People Places & Things, displayed a growing engagement with electronics.
