Biography
Slipstream arose among numerous offshoots of the Spacemen 3 drone-rock circle. Singer and guitarist Mark Refoy made his initial appearance on the group’s closing 1991 album Recurring before joining Jason Pierce to establish Spiritualized. Once the latter band finished its acclaimed 1992 release Lazer Guided Melodies, Refoy departed to launch Slipstream, shifting toward a pop direction. Fellow Spiritualized veteran Jon Mattock handled percussion, while guitarist Ian Anderson, bassist Gary Lennon, and drummer Steve Beswick completed the lineup. The band surfaced in summer 1994 via the single “Sundown,” issued several 7" records, and then captured its self-titled debut in 1995. Later that year the compilation Side Effects collected earlier tracks, and Slipstream delivered its next full-length effort, Be Groovy or Leave, in 1997.
