Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra

Established in 1949 within Bratislava—then located inside Czechoslovakia—the Slovak Philharmonic, or Slovenská filharmónia in its native language, counts among the more recent arrivals on the roster of distinguished European symphonic ensembles. Despite its relative youth, the group secured broad international recognition throughout the 1990s and the opening years of the 2000s through extensive recording activity and repeated partnerships with leading guest artists from abroad. Vaclav Talich, its inaugural conductor, and Ludovit Ratjer, its first music director, played central roles in shaping the orchestra’s early identity and growth. Beginning in the 1950s, the ensemble presented its concerts inside Bratislava’s elegant Reduta concert hall, completed in 1773 and serving ever since as the orchestra’s primary venue. Following Rajter’s departure from the podium in 1976, leadership passed to several respected figures, among them Ladislav Slovak, who remained until 1981, Libor Pesek, and, during 1990 and 1991, Aldo Ceccato—the first principal conductor drawn from outside Czechoslovak territory. Once Slovakia separated peacefully from the Czech Republic in 1993, the Philharmonic shifted from one accomplished ensemble among many to the nation’s principal orchestral representative, steadily drawing an expanding circle of international conductors and soloists. Claudio Abbado, Sergiu Celibidache, and Mariss Jansons number among those visitors. Although the permanent conductorship stayed largely in Slovak and Czech hands for some time—highlighted by Jiří Bělohlávek’s tenure during the 2003–2004 season—the appointment of French conductor Emmanuel Villaume in 2009 marked a notable change; he held the post until 2016, when Britain’s James Judd, previously at the helm of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and founder of the Miami Music Project, succeeded him. In more recent seasons the orchestra has also operated under the direction of its permanent guest conductors Leos Svarovsky, who concluded his service in 2018, Rastislav Stur, and Petr Altrichter. Its sizable recorded legacy appears chiefly on the Naxos, Zebralution, and Denon labels; for Naxos the ensemble issued a collection of symphonic poems composed during Bedřich Smetana’s period in Sweden.
