In 1997 Brent Oliver and Lyle Bell launched Slow Fresh Oil as a side project during a break from their main band Molly's Reach. Elements of prog rock, indie pop, math, and theremin noise were fused when drummer Rob Hoffart joined to round out the trio, and the group issued its debut album, White Trash on Black Lacquer, on the band’s own Green Pepper Records imprint in 1998. Post Operative Socket Management appeared the next year.
