Snafu originated in 1973 when vocalist Bobby Harrison, previously of Procol Harum and Freedom, joined forces with guitarist Mick Moody, whose earlier work included stints in Tramline, the Mike Cotton Sound, and Juicy Lucy. Bassist Colin Gibson, drawn from Ginger Baker's Air Force, drummer Terry Popple, formerly with Mickey Jupp's Legend, and keyboardist Pete Solley completed the initial roster. The group issued its first two albums, Snafu and Situation Normal, on the WWA label in 1974, both of which earned strong critical praise. Solley departed the following year, prompting the addition of keyboardist Brian Chatton, another experienced session player, while Tim Hinkley joined on keyboards to finalize the configuration that tracked the third album, All Funked Up. Because its original pressing on the Capitol label remained limited to vinyl, that record later acquired a reputation as the band's "great lost album." Snafu disbanded not long after the 1976 release.
