Damien Verrett operates as So Much Light when crafting music that fuses his affinity for yearning contemporary R&B, electronica, and densely textured indie pop as a singer, songwriter, and producer. Raised in the Sacramento region, he first learned saxophone during elementary school and switched to guitar near age twelve. His father, a guitarist rooted in R&B, blues, and rock, provided early lessons. Verrett then developed his technique by replicating songs from Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin, eventually cultivating a deeper appreciation for modern R&B acts including R. Kelly and Drake. In high school he performed with several bands, and while enrolled at the University of California, Davis, he continued exploring multiple electronic and indie rock ventures. After graduation he began shaping the So Much Light aesthetic, tracking material in his childhood bedroom by stacking bass, drums, and guitar with electronics and keyboards. An introductory EP surfaced on Anti-Epitaph in 2015, spotlighting his expressive, boundary-crossing approach. Two years afterward he released his first full-length album, Oh, Yuck, which contained the single “Be Afraid” and featured a guest turn from Chicago singer Nnamdi Ogbonnaya.
