Soho

Led by the twin sisters Jacqui and Pauline Soho together with guitarist, singer and producer Timothy London, the group Soho enjoyed fleeting international attention in the early 1990s thanks to their single “Hippychick.” The sisters entered the world in Wolverhampton, England, and first joined voices in the early 1980s while employed as student nurses in St. Albans. Their introduction to London, along with the initial lineup of Mr X, DJ Freeze, Liam Gillick and Dukey D, prompted a series of performances under assorted names before the ensemble finally adopted the moniker Soho. A 1987 deal with HEDD/Virgin yielded their earliest club success via the single “Piece Of You.”

HEDD soon shuttered amid reported “financial irregularity,” prompting a 1989 arrangement with Savage Tam Records and the exit of Dukey D. The label’s second release, “Hippychick” from the album Goddess, incorporated the guitar riff from the Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now.” The track gained traction across America and Europe, sending the band on continuous road work both independently and alongside Jesus Jones. Savage Tam next issued Thug, yet the album did not match its predecessor’s commercial reach before the label collapsed in 1992. London and Jacqui welcomed a child in 1993, after which the group entered a temporary lull marked by repeated personnel and imprint shifts, although fresh recordings continued well into the new millennium.
