Undoubtedly the foremost steel guitarist of Hawaii's golden era, Sol Ho'opi'i reached the mainland in 1919 by stowing away aboard a vessel. Countless Hawaiian slide compilations featured his work, and their accompanying notes routinely summed him up in one terse adjective: "hot." Over two hundred of his 78s were cut in Los Angeles, where he drew enthusiastic crowds to venues such as the Hula Hutt and Seven Seas. He also performed in numerous films, traveled widely to promote his rhythmic slide approach, and exerted a lasting influence on the lap-steel and pedal-steel players who shaped the rising country & western genre.
