Biography
Natural sound archivist Dan Gibson originated the continuing Solitudes collection of environmental recordings after developing a deep affinity for wilderness settings during childhood summers spent camping in Ontario. He launched Dan Gibson Productions Ltd. in 1946 to produce nature films and television programs, introducing innovative methods for capturing outdoor audio and periodically issuing LPs drawn from those field recordings. Following four decades in film work, Gibson, then aged 59, devoted himself entirely to environmental soundscape albums upon introducing Solitudes in 1981. Gordon, his son, joined the effort in 1986, leading the pair to integrate musical passages into the recordings and to present the releases both as archives of wildlife sounds and as resources for easing stress and supporting meditation.
