Emerging in 2005, the contemporary/neo-traditional folk trio Sometymes Why centered on the contributions of Kristin Andreassen, Aoife O'Donovan and Ruth Ungar Merenda, whose instrumental duties encompassed vocals, harmonica, guitar, glockenspiel and tambourine for Andreassen, voice, baritone ukulele, Wurlitzer, piano, guitar, soprano ukulele and glockenspiel for O'Donovan, and voice, fiddle, soprano ukulele, guitar, baritone ukulele and glockenspiel for Merenda. The ensemble took shape through prior affiliations with Uncle Earl, the Jolly Bankers (Andreassen), Crooked Still, the Wild Band of Snee, the Wayfaring Strangers (O'Donovan), the Mammals and Jay Ungar & Molly Mason's Family Band (Merenda). Their fusion of Americana, old-timey/alternative country and alternative folk first surfaced on the self-released, self-titled Sometymes Why that year and continued with Your Heart Is a Glorious Machine in 2009.
