Based in Omaha, Nebraska, the project Son, Ambulance revolves around vocalist and songwriter Joe Knapp, widely recognized for his prior work alongside Bright Eyes. Its earliest appearance on record occurred in 2001 through the split LP Oh Holy Fools, issued jointly with that same act. After signing with Saddle Creek, the band—then featuring Knapp together with bassist Robert Little, drummer Jeff Koster, and keyboardist Jeff Tafolla—delivered its first proper full-length, Euphemystic, still in 2001. Later sessions yielded the 2005 Saddle Creek album identified simply as Key because of the key image on its cover; those sessions drew on an entirely refreshed and larger roster that included Jenna Morrison, Daniel Knapp, Dylan Strimple, and Erica Petersen. Following three years of limited activity, the project resurfaced in 2008 with Someone Else’s Déjà Vu, again on Saddle Creek; this release centered on Knapp as the principal force, with assistance from Jeff Koster and Daniel Knapp, and featured guest contributions from members of fellow Nebraska outfits Tilly and the Wall and the Faint.
