Son by Four emerged as a Puerto Rican vocal quartet rooted largely in family ties, with Javier Montes and George Montes among the brothers alongside their cousin Pedro Quiles and Angel Lopez completing the lineup. Latin-pop producer and songwriter Omar Alfanno spotted the ensemble’s rich vocal blend and ease with both languages, paving the way for their contract with Sony Discos. The quartet’s debut effort, Preparense, arrived in 1998 and quickly resonated with listeners drawn to Latin and tropical pop sounds. Their self-titled follow-up, however, issued in the first months of 2000, propelled them to widespread fame. Although the set marked the members’ initial forays into composition, its standout element proved to be the explosive single “A Puro Dolor” (“Purest of Pain”). The track lingered on the Latin singles chart for close to twelve months, establishing a fresh benchmark by holding the top spot for twenty consecutive weeks; it simultaneously marked the first Spanish-language recording to crack the mainstream pop listings in almost twenty years while driving Son by Four to gold certification. Recognizing crossover possibilities, Sony issued the English-language counterpart Purest of Pain late that same year, targeting pop listeners outside the Latin market.
