Biography
Known to listeners as both a Visionaries alumnus and an Of Mexican Descent participant, 2Mex first floated the Songodsuns alias during informal mid-’90s sessions that paired him with DJ Nobody and several other associates intent on completing a full-length project. Scheduling conflicts ultimately shelved that effort, yet the lone 1999 single “Love Fights Back” still surfaced. Years later, while maintaining a relentless tour schedule, 2Mex recruited an array of producers—Sa-Ra, KeyKool, Babu, Subtitle, DJ Khalil and additional collaborators—to shape tracks under the Songodsuns name, a deliberate vehicle for exploring sounds outside hip-hop; he cited formative exposure to They Might Be Giants, Elliott Smith, and the Cure. The resulting set, Over the Counter Culture, fused those broader textures with 2Mex’s characteristically gravel-toned delivery atop beats that remained rooted in rap, and Up Above issued the album in 2005.
