Corey Glover first rose to prominence fronting the band Living Colour, though he has also released his own recordings and taken on roles in film and on television. Born November 6, 1964, in Brooklyn, NY, he encountered guitarist Vernon Reid—an already established and sought-after session player—in the early 1980s after Reid heard Glover deliver a soulful version of “Happy Birthday” at a gathering hosted by a shared acquaintance. Together with drummer Will Calhoun and bassist Muzz Skillings, the pair assembled Living Colour; the quartet quickly generated attention in the New York underground through its aggressive rock attack and lyrics addressing social issues. Glover stepped away temporarily after securing a role in Oliver Stone’s Vietnam War film Platoon, yet returned in time for the group to secure a deal with Epic Records, aided by a demo produced by Mick Jagger. Their 1989 debut Vivid immediately yielded the hit single and video “Cult of Personality.”

Subsequent releases Time’s Up in 1990 and Stain in 1993 maintained the band’s provocative direction until the 1995 breakup, by which point Muzz Skillings had already departed and Doug Wimbish had taken over on bass. Glover pursued solo work, issuing the 1998 album Hymns, which received limited notice, while also serving as a VH1 VJ and appearing in the 1996 feature Loose Women. In 2001 he rejoined his former Living Colour bandmates for live dates and plans for a new recording.
