Biography
Music runs deep through the Lewis lineage. Ralph Lewis first appeared onstage at mountain music gatherings when he was six, sharing bills with bluegrass originator Bill Monroe. In 1974 he joined Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys on guitar, though he continued to operate his refrigeration company in North Carolina. By then he had already begun instructing his sons Don and Marty on guitar and banjo. The three eventually formed Sons of Ralph, with Don—whose résumé includes work alongside Doc Watson and a Hee Haw appearance—taking leads on several string instruments while Ralph handles guitar and vocals. A rhythm section rounds out the lineup, and the band tours the Southeast, mixing bluegrass, Cajun, and rock at clubs and festivals. Sons of Ralph issued their debut album, Grab a Root and Growl, in 2001.
