Biography
BBC DJ Gilles Peterson, who has long championed Brazilian music dating back to his pirate-radio era, assembled the all-star Sonzeira session that united legends, overlooked veterans, and emerging contemporary players. Intent on crafting a forward-looking album while honoring the nation’s diverse musical traditions, Peterson traveled to Rio, where in January 2014 he convened Elza Soares, Naná Vasconcelos, Marcos Valle, Ed Motta, Seu Jorge, and Alexandre Kassin. Record Store Day 2014 offered an early glimpse of the project through a 7-inch single featuring a radical take on Freeez’s 1981 Brit-funk classic “Southern Freeez,” delivered by Emanuelle Araújo. The full album, Brasil Bam Bam Bam, appeared that June on Talkin’ Loud/Virgin EMI, marking Peterson’s first Talkin’ Loud release in more than ten years.
