Lacking any formal training in music or prior stage appearances, Zelmani nevertheless ascended to the summit of the charts on the strength of her first album. Though widely regarded as intensely reserved, her delicate country-inflected work as a singer and songwriter soon found listeners throughout Europe and Asia. At the age of fourteen she received her first guitar, learning basic chords from her father before teaching herself to compose songs; nearly a decade later she mailed demo tapes to several record companies. Sony answered first, introducing her to producer and guitarist Lars Halapi, already known for his work with Ulf Lundell and Bo Kaspers Orkester. The unusually close partnership that followed, in which Halapi exercised complete control over the arrangements, may have been his most fruitful. He lent the self-titled debut album an atmosphere recalling early Van Morrison, yet every song originated with Zelmani, whose clear, fragile voice supplied an unmistakable sense of authenticity. The record entered the charts at number four during the winter of 1995 and quickly earned gold certification in Sweden and Japan. An extensive promotional tour across Europe followed, after which Zelmani traveled to the United States to promote the album amid the success of comparable female singer/songwriters such as Jewel. Precious Burden appeared in 1998; while it failed to duplicate the debut’s immediate commercial impact, it received strong critical notices. Although the reticent artist attempted to limit live performances, she could not entirely escape public attention and gradually grew more accustomed to it. The earlier two albums had been largely studio creations shaped by Halapi’s production and instrumental contributions, yet for the next release Zelmani assembled a proper band. Halapi remained as producer and arranger while also writing one track for the 1999 album Time to Kill.
