Biography
In early 1994, as Trumans Water shifted its base from San Diego to the Pacific Northwest, multi-instrumentalist Glenn Galloway elected to remain behind. Adopting the name Glen Galaxy, he launched the largely solo endeavor Soul-Junk and began composing songs that celebrated Jesus Christ, frequently lifting large sections of text straight from the Bible. The project’s debut, the 1995 album 1950 on Holy Kiss, marked the start of a steady stream of recordings issued on Homestead, Shrimper, and Sub Pop in every format from CDs and LPs to cassettes and 7''s. Each Soul-Junk title draws from a mid-century year, most often postwar ones, yet Galloway has consistently declined to explain the significance of those dates or the reasons behind their release sequence. Throughout this period he continued an informal association with Trumans Water, joining the band for tours and occasional studio work without resuming official membership. Soul-Junk’s sound blended indie rock, hip-hop, soul, and lo-fi experimentation in ways that recalled Ween, the Beastie Boys, and Beck. The ambitious double-disc collection 1955 appeared in 1999 and highlighted the project’s restless movement across genres, while the more streamlined 1956 followed in 2000 with its attention centered on the quirky hip-hop dimension.
