The reggae outfit Soul Vibrations from Nicaragua demonstrates that artists outside Jamaica can deliver straight-ahead roots reggae comparable to that produced by their Jamaican counterparts. The band's core consists of Philip Montalvan and Raymond Myers, both of African-Caribbean heritage and natives to Nicaragua's Atlantic coast, a region shaped by Caribbean migrants and early British colonial influence in contrast to the Spanish-colonized Pacific side. These two serve as the primary motivators for the group. Their temperaments stand in stark contrast, with Myers acting as the engaging and lighthearted lead vocalist and Montalvan functioning as the focused and earnest composer whose lyrics emphasize love, unity, and optimism while urging people of African descent across the globe to come together. Numerous tracks champion the ideas of Marcus Garvey, whom the duo views as among the foremost black figures of the twentieth century. Although their material avoids overt political statements, it highlights the deceit, self-interest, and unfairness evident among those in power. Montalvan nonetheless identifies as non-political, a stance potentially linked to his abductions and detentions at various points by the Contras as well as the Sandanistas amid Nicaragua's revolutionary period. The Soul Vibrations began as a seven-piece ensemble yet reduced to five members following the issuance of their debut record.
