Biography
Sound Team traces its origins to a college friendship between Bill Baird and Matt Oliver, University of Texas classmates whose paths crossed before the group took official shape. Engaged in separate musical projects at the time, the pair bonded over a mutual passion for home recording. Following graduation, they relocated to Portland, OR, where they resided with Baird's acquaintances Sam Sanford and Gabe Pearlman—individuals destined to become Sound Team members—and maintained regular employment while continuing to compose, capture, and present original songs. The year 2001 saw the two return to Texas, at which point they recruited Willis Diviney for drumming, Michael Baird (Bill's sibling, then a high school student) for keyboards and synthesizers, and Sanford for guitar. In this configuration, with Bill Baird handling songwriting along with bass and Matt Oliver managing guitar plus lead vocals, the ensemble utilized a four-track recorder to produce the CD-R Into the Lens, issued during 2002. Within that same period, Jordan Johns, previously a bandmate of Michael's, replaced Diviney on drums, and Pearlman subsequently added his contributions on keyboards. Following the distribution of several independently released albums and cassettes, the musicians established Big Orange Records in Austin and proceeded to document tracks destined for the 2005 EP Work as well as the album Movie Monster, which appeared via Capitol in 2006.
