Sounder came together in the early 2000s when Mike Aho, who had already helmed multiple music videos for Bonnie "Prince" Billy, joined forces with Steve Stratton to explore a cerebral, rustic sound reminiscent of Iron & Wine and Will Oldham. Their first full-length, There Is Another Sun Clouded Over with Meticulous Care, appeared on Volcom Entertainment in 2006. Two years afterward, the duo issued their sophomore effort, Good Things Come and Go Like Bad Things. In the period preceding its release, Aho-directed clips populated the group's MySpace page, with several visual artists—among them Michael Sieben, Dave Bryant, and Travis Millard—contributing to the project.
