Biography
The origins of Parachute lie in Charlottesville, Virginia, where the ensemble refined a pop-rock approach blending elements of Maroon 5 and the Fray, with prominent acoustic guitar, piano, and affable vocals, all while performing under the earlier name Sparky's Flaw. The five-piece group, consisting of William Anderson on vocals, guitar, and keyboard, John Stubblefield on drums, Christopher "Kit" French on saxophone and keyboard, Alex Hargrave on bass, and Nate McFarland on guitar, initially assembled during the members' high school period. During their college years the fresh-faced bandmates gained notice by opening for Robert Randolph at the University of Virginia, an achievement that helped drive interest in the independently released One Small Step EP from 2005. Sparky's Flaw next aligned with Red Light Management, the company representing the Dave Matthews Band, and in summer 2007 entered a recording agreement with Smash Records, an imprint of the recently revived Mercury Records.
An eponymous EP appeared in August while the musicians began their final year at U.Va. and prepared a full-length debut. Before that album surfaced, however, the group adopted the name Parachute and contributed a song to Nivea's national television campaign. Losing Sleep arrived in May 2009 as Parachute's major-label debut.
