Biography
Sparta Locals emerged as a Japanese post-punk outfit with pronounced dance elements and remained a fixture on the domestic alternative circuit throughout the 2000s, earning endorsements from Quruli and Number Girl after sharing bills with both acts. Formed in late 1998, the project revolved around teenage vocalist-guitarist Abe Kousei, who recruited Ito Shinnichi on guitar, Abe Mitsuhiro on bass, and Akihito Nakayama on drums. Early momentum was modest, yet the quartet cultivated a reputation for intense live shows; their debut album, Kanashii Miminari, appeared in 2002 and was followed by extensive national touring that encompassed Fuji Rock Festival and a support slot for Quruli, whose frontman Kishida Shigeru later recalled their set as “so cool it made my nose bleed.” Universal signed the band the following year, issuing the second album Second Fanfare in 2003. Between 2002 and 2006 the group maintained a consistent release schedule of four albums while performing alongside Number Girl, Zazen Boys, Fujifabric, and Mo’some Tonebender; they also played the 2005 Nano Mugen festival and contributed to a compilation curated by Asian Kung-Fu Generation. Nakayama exited in 2006, citing insufficient technical ability, prompting a move to Tokuma and the recruitment of session drummer Takeshi Kajiyama, who joined permanently in 2007. Two further yearly albums followed before another label shift in 2008, when Leecher surfaced on Daizawa Records; the band announced its dissolution in 2009.
