Biography
Special Ed launched his career via an outstanding debut album shaped by the relentless production force of Hitman Howie Tee. Archer had already spent his junior high years sharpening his lyrics and tightening his rhymes before linking with Tee, who agreed to create several beats. Those recordings reached Profile Records without delay, prompting swift interest and formal approval for the project. Although the album arrived when he was only 16, the verses conveyed striking maturity and self-assurance, and sales exceeding half a million quickly established his presence. A more romantic sensibility surfaced on the follow-up, which felt less abrasive yet still delivered a compelling introduction. Working once more with Tee on most tracks, Archer himself produced four cuts and invited several associates, among them his brother Drew Archer plus 40-Love, Little Shawn, and DJ Akshan. Three years then elapsed between Legal and the third album, which was slated for release in 1993. Archer later recalled that interval as time spent “working with groups and putting together a studio and office in Brooklyn.” He also supplied a track for 2Pac’s Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. Sessions for the new project reportedly featured DJ Premier, Large Professor, and A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip, while additional work paired him with Masta Ace and Buckshot (Black Moon) on the Crooklyn Dodgers’ successful single “Crooklyn.”
