Special Interest arose amid New Orleans’ mid-2010s D.I.Y. milieu, fusing angular no wave, impulsive hardcore, glam, and alternative dance grooves. Their inaugural full-length, Spiraling, surfaced in 2018. The quartet’s Rough Trade debut, Endure, arrived in 2022 and broadened their palette toward the artier dance-rock of Sparks and the B-52s while retaining their dissonant foundations.

Vocalist Alli Logout and guitarist Maria Elena launched the project using only guitar, drum machine, and power drill. From the outset they operated collectively rather than as a single songwriter’s vehicle, eventually stabilizing as Logout, Elena, bassist Nathan Cassiani, and synth-and-drum-machine player Ruth Mascelli. In May 2016 the group self-released the cassette Trust No Wave, a batch of freshly tracked demos. Quintron, also known as Jay Poggi, helmed their first proper album, Spiraling, issued on Raw Sugar Records in February 2018. For June 2020’s The Passion Of the band shifted to Thrilling Living in the U.S. and Night School in the U.K. and Europe; James Whitten (Thou, Joystick) handled recording and mixing duties.

Endure, their third album, drew from both pandemic-induced despair and the moral outrage of the widespread 2020 protests. Self-produced at High Tower in New Orleans with Whitten engineering, the record was mixed by Collin Dupuis (Lana Del Rey, the Black Keys, JEFF the Brotherhood) and emerged on Rough Trade Records in November 2022.
