Speed Caravan emerged in 2008 as an ethnic fusion project uniting two French musicians, Mehdi Haddab and Pascal Teillet. Haddab, born in Algeria and recognized as an oud specialist with prior work in Ekova and DuOud, joined forces with Teillet—also credited as Pasco—who had previously worked as a bassist alongside Rodolphe Burger, Erik Marchand, and Rachid Taha. Additional contributors include Hermione Frank on electronics, Mohamed Bouamar handling percussion and vocals, Rocky Singh providing vocals, and further supporting musicians. Through Newbled Records, the ensemble released its debut full-length album, Kalashnik Love, that same year. David Husser served as producer, shaping an album that blends electro-rock with ethnic fusion elements and draws on original compositions, traditional Algerian pieces, and reinterpretations, highlighted by its version of the Cure’s “Killing an Arab.”
