Born in the United States, Spencer Ross served as a musical arranger throughout the 1940s before issuing the hit single “Tracy’s Theme” under his own name in 1960. During that decade he arranged for the Gordon Jenkins orchestra and later held positions at both Big Top and Columbia Records in the 1950s. Written by Robert Ascher and spotlighting Jimmy Abato on saxophone, “Tracy’s Theme” was taped for Columbia in late 1959 and featured in the television special The Philadelphia Story. The recording soon captured widespread attention, climbing to number 13. Ross subsequently released an album and several additional singles in a similar vein, yet none returned him to the upper reaches of the charts.
