Biography
Spiral Dance, an Australian Celtic folk-rock ensemble, originated in 1992 when vocalist Adrienne Piggott and guitarist Nick Carter established the project together on home soil. Drawing creative impetus from Celtic musical traditions alongside the ancient lore of those regions, the lineup later expanded to encompass Ingrid Hapke on violin and vocals, David Bentley handling bass guitar, Paul Gooding contributing accordion and keyboards, plus Rick Kearsley on percussion. Although the ensemble delivered its inaugural public appearance at the South Australian Folk Festival in 1993, the debut full-length recording Woman of the Earth did not surface until 1996. The succeeding effort Over the Nine Waves arrived the next year. Following the unveiling of the third album Magick, the musicians intended a United States tour for 1999 yet lacked sufficient funds, prompting them instead to schedule performances across Australia. Further domestic touring and festival engagements persisted until the 2002 issuance of the fourth studio album Notes of Being. In 2003 the collective at last presented multiple concerts stateside. After suspending both live work and studio activity throughout 2004, Spiral Dance shared a bill with Inkubus Sukkubus, an event that yielded an invitation to accompany that act on European dates. Upon resuming recording sessions, the group issued The Quickening in 2006 and subsequently produced its initial live document Worts 'n' All, which appeared in 2007. An additional studio album remained slated for release during 2008.
