Biography
Springtime Carnivore may project ferocity through its title, yet the project's sound conveys something gentler. The songs blend sunshine pop, psychedelia, and folk-rock within an indie-rock framework, delivering brightness and intelligence while avoiding excessive sheen. The endeavor functions as Greta Morgan's solo outlet; she entered the world in Oak Brook, Illinois, on February 12, 1988. Piano lessons began for her at age two, followed soon afterward by the creation of "goofy little ditties." Exposure to '60s folk and '70s pop 45s arrived via a basement jukebox maintained by her father, an influence that would later surface in her own recordings. As a multi-instrumentalist proficient on guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums in addition to vocals, Morgan first gained recognition through Chicago outfits the Hush Sound, active from 2004 to 2008, and Gold Motel, which operated between 2009 and 2011. After moving to Los Angeles, California, she initiated the Springtime Carnivore project; she also performed live with La Sera, the group fronted by Katy Goodman of the Vivian Girls. The moniker emerged after Morgan spotted a coyote during songwriting sessions. Her first single under the name appeared in August 2014, and the bulk of the self-titled debut album was tracked in a provisional studio she assembled inside her rehearsal room, where she performed every part except bass. Remaining tracks were captured at producer Richard Swift's National Freedom facility in Oregon. Following a 2016 collaborative covers album with Katy Goodman of La Sera, Morgan issued Midnight Room, her second full-length release as Springtime Carnivore.
