Biography
Alternative rockers St. Johnny came together as a quartet in Hartford, CT, during 1991. Guitarist and vocalist Bill Whitten joined bassist Jim Elliott, drummer Wayne Letitia, and guitarist Tom Leonard to issue a 7" single on the band's self-run Asthma Records imprint. The release drew sufficient notice for Chicago-based Ajax Records to issue a follow-up single. Those two early efforts, characterized by noisily melodic dirty punk rock, sparked a modest bidding war by the close of 1992 that DGC Records ultimately won. Caroline Records assembled a 1993 compilation containing both independent singles along with four previously unheard tracks, preceding the arrival of the group's first full-length album, 1994's Speed Is Dreaming.
