Biography
Born in New York, Stacey Phillips has turned the dobro, a resonating guitar, into a vehicle for a wide array of musical styles. Through his work in Breakfast Special alongside Tony Trischka, Andy Statman, and Kenny Kosek, and later in Tasty Licks with Bela Fleck, he helped carry the bluegrass tradition into urban settings. Phillips has kept pushing the boundaries of the instrument, appearing for several years with a charnaga-style salsa band while also performing in a duo with vocalist/guitarist Paul Howard that spans bluegrass, jazz, Caribbean, and Hawaiian music. He has played additional bluegrass sets with former Seldom Scene vocalist and guitarist Phil Rosenthal and his wife Beth, delivered honky tonk swing alongside the Honeydews, and explored a fusion of jazz and klezmer in Bassology. Guitar Player called him “one of the hottest pickers around.”
Phillips has authored multiple books on dobro repertoire and methods, among them The Mel Bay Complete Dobro Player, and has produced numerous instructional videos for Homespun Tapes.
