Biography
Originating in Hamilton, Ontario, the six-foot-four Stan Rogers first played bass in rock bands before devoting himself to folk music and poetic songwriting. Through his resonant vocals he evoked the enchantment and spiritual essence of the Canadian places that shaped him. Listeners now and then mistook his style for Gordon Lightfoot’s, yet Rogers delivered a huskier, more grounded timbre, and his body of work—cycles of songs gathered from every region of the country—favored deeper ties to tradition along with stronger mystical currents. An onboard fire during an Air Canada flight claimed his life in Cincinnati, Ohio, in June 1983, after which six albums stood as his recorded legacy.
