Biography
Born Stanley Scott Greenthal on 16 April 1949 in New York City, New York, USA, the musician traces his lineage to English arrivals around the Mayflower period, while his father’s side stems from Alsace Lorraine—an ancestral mix that likely accounts for his deep attraction to musical traditions from those locales. At fourteen he acquired his first guitar, then three years later relocated westward. He completed a B.A. in English Literature at the University of Colorado. Marriage followed during those years, yet his wife’s death two years afterward prompted the title track of Songs For The Journey. That album showcases two notable instrumentals, ‘January/After Midnight Polkas’ and ‘Still Untitled’, with Greenthal contributing guitar and mandocello alongside fiddler Kevin Burke of Patrick Street and Michaél Ó Dhomhnaill of the Bothy Band and Relativity, the latter also serving as producer. Throughout the early 1970s Greenthal resided in southern England, where he absorbed Irish music extensively, and he journeyed through Scotland, Ireland, Greece, and Brittany, taking in the distinct musical idioms of each culture. All Roads extends the Celtic and Balkan threads already present in his compositions. Greenthal has appeared on both U.S. coasts and has shared stages with Robin Williamson.
