Biography
Stanley Turrentine earned acclaim as a master of the tenor saxophone, celebrated for his lush, undulating sound, deep roots in blues traditions, and knack for infusing grooves with emotional depth and creativity. He explored numerous musical contexts throughout his career, gaining particular fame for the soul-jazz sessions he cut for Blue Note during the 1960s, while also embracing a fusion style that brought him wider audiences in the early 1970s. Pittsburgh was his birthplace on April 5, 1934, where his professional journey started alongside various blues and R&B ensembles, drawing heavily from the style of Illinois Jacquet. From 1950 to 1951, he performed in Lowell Fulson's group alongside Ray Charles. In 1953, he took over John Coltrane's position within Earl Bostic's pioneering R&B and jazz outfit. Following his military service in the mid-1950s, Turrentine became part of Max Roach's ensemble, which led to his introduction to organist Shirley Scott; the two wed in 1960 and collaborated on numerous recordings thereafter. His relocation to Philadelphia fostered a strong musical rapport with organist Jimmy Smith, resulting in appearances on such landmark 1960 releases as Back at the Chicken Shack and Midnight Special. That same year marked the beginning of his tenure as a Blue Note recording artist, where he focused primarily on intimate soul-jazz groups, as heard on albums including That's Where It's At, joined forces with the Three Sounds for their 1961 effort Blue Hour, and ventured into bigger band arrangements by the middle of the decade. With the arrival of the 1970s came his divorce from Scott and a shift to Creed Taylor's CTI imprint, known for its fusion leanings; there he contributed to five projects, among them Sugar, Salt Song, and Don't Mess With Mister T. Although these accessible recordings held artistic merit, reviewers were less favorable toward his subsequent Fantasy output from the late 1970s; nevertheless, he maintained a steady pace of releases and rediscovered his signature soul-jazz approach during the 1980s and 1990s. A massive stroke claimed his life on September 12, 2000.
