Biography
State Bird, known for their affinity toward frontier themes as shown through their use of fake Native American face paint, drew inspiration from unconventional themed indie groups such as Sufjan Stevens with his focus on marching bands and the fifty states, along with freak folk performers including Devendra Banhart and Vetiver. At its core, the group represents the collaborative songwriting efforts of Coby Hartzler and Jared Riblet, supported by an ever-changing lineup of musicians featuring Nate Quinn, Ryan Straits, Matt Garver, Marcie Lorens, Joe Weaver, and Caleb Winn Ash10 Tullar. Their first album, Marching Thru the Wilderness, came out independently in 2006. Subsequently, The Record Machine signed them, resulting in the 2008 release of their sophomore effort, Mostly Ghostly.
