Steel River spent four years performing amateur shows and high-school events in the Toronto area before turning professional in 1969, at which point they inked a deal with Tuesday Records the next year. Their debut album Weighin' Heavy, released in 1970, yielded the Canadian hit "Ten Pound Note." Three years following the release of 1971's A Better Road, the band disbanded, only to reunite in 1980 for the purpose of cutting the single "Armoured Car."
