Jack Traylor, a folksinger, assembled the ensemble toward the close of the 1960s. Its membership by 1973 included Diana Harris handling vocals and piano, Craig Chaquico on lead guitar after his time with Soma, Skip Moriarty contributing guitar, flute, and vocals, Danny Virdier on bass, along with Rick Quintanal at the drums. Ties ran deep between Steelwind and Jefferson Airplane along with related endeavors, to which Traylor had contributed songs from time to time. The Grunt imprint, connected to the Airplane, released A Child Of Nature. Acoustic foundations supported the tracks, many exploring ecological and social subjects. The recording captured the prevailing mood and essence of the city’s music from the sixties. The band’s dissolution followed shortly after Chaquico’s move to Jefferson Starship.
