Biography
An Italian composer and theorist played a key role in moving away from polyphonic traditions toward the concertato approach. That shift appears clearly in the masses he issued in 1615, some left unaccompanied while others combine voices with instruments. Two years before, he had already applied the concertato principle to settings of motets and psalms. His output served both sacred and secular contexts, and pieces such as the instrumental "Little/Short Madrigals" were designed for performance with variations.
