Biography
Stemm emerged as an American heavy metal band drawing from hardcore, rap, punk, post-grunge, and hard rock traditions. The group formed in the late 1990s and initially pursued a rap-metal and hardcore direction before adjusting its roster and securing a licensing agreement with the UFC in the early 2000s. This shift produced a more radio-friendly yet still intense active rock approach, evident on releases such as Songs for the Incurable Heart (2005), Blood Scent (2008), and Crossroads (2011). Stemm sustained ties to the UFC by creating its theme song “Face the Pain” and placing tracks in additional MMA programming and related media. The band ceased operations in 2012, resumed activity in 2019, and issued the single “Don't Act Surprised.”
Joe Cafarella on guitar and vocals, Russ Martin on bass, Jimi on drums, and Louis Penque on vocals established the group in Niagara Falls during 1998. Stemm quickly gained traction locally, opening its debut performance alongside Sevendust. Several compilation appearances and spots in independent films preceded the 1999 recording of the debut EP Further Efforts, which retained the earlier hardcore rap-metal orientation.
Guitarist Rich Spalla joined in 2000 as the lineup stabilized and the band’s profile expanded. The members then tracked their first full-length effort, Dead to Me, which surfaced in 2002 to favorable notices. Around the same time they composed the UFC theme “Face the Pain,” embedding their sound in numerous pay-per-view events and extreme sports broadcasts, with additional placements in video games. Extensive national touring and self-promotion led to a 2004 Jägermeister endorsement shared with acts including 36 Crazyfists, Chimaira, All That Remains, and Mushroomhead.
The ensemble, now featuring vocalist TJ Frost, guitarists Cafarella and Spalla, bassist Steve Crowl, and drummer Dan Nelligan, recorded Songs for the Incurable Heart. Issued on I Scream Records in September 2006, the album reflected a broader rock direction reminiscent of Alice in Chains, Pantera, and Stone Sour. Frost departed in 2007, prompting Cafarella to assume lead vocals. Blood Scent followed in 2008 on Catch-22 Records, with “House of Cards” adopted as the theme for the UFC Wired series. After Crossroads appeared in 2011, Stemm played a final Buffalo concert at Town Ballroom in 2012 that included members from multiple eras. The group reconvened in 2019, releasing the single “Don't Act Surprised” at the same time it entered the Niagara Falls Music Hall of Fame.
