Biography
Singer/songwriter Stephanie Davis moves with equal ease between jazz standards and stories drawn from cowboy life. Born and raised in Montana within a cattle-ranching family, she later nurtured an interest in songwriting and relocated to Nashville in pursuit of music-industry opportunities. Although she launched a performing career with a 1993 Asylum Records release, her songwriting brought wider recognition when Shelby Lynne, Waylon Jennings, and Martina McBride cut her material. Garth Brooks emerged as a key supporter, placing three of her songs—“Wolves,” “The Gift,” and “We Shall Be Free”—on his albums, enlisting her as an opening act, and adding her to his touring band. Disillusioned by the assembly-line character of Nashville studios, Davis left the city in the mid-’90s, purchased a modest Montana ranch, and converted a one-room cabin—initially occupied by cattle—into a writing space. Assuming full command of her output, she focused on more autobiographical songs and recorded two albums for her own Recluse Records imprint: the collection of jazzy standards and originals I’m Pullin’ Through, and the Western-themed River of No Return, which featured her own renditions of two compositions Brooks had popularized. She has since become a regular presence at cowboy poetry gatherings and continues to perform regularly across Montana and the broader West.
