Biography
Stephen Bacchus, a pianist and composer, crafts music that conjures densely layered and deeply textured soundscapes. He blends classical, jazz, new age, world, and ambient elements while probing fresh tonal possibilities within his work. The Aquarian observed that "(Bacchus) ranks among the best New Age composers".
Recording technology and musique concrète captured his imagination from the earliest age. He began composing pieces at fourteen and later honed his craft at York University in Toronto, completing a bachelor of fine arts degree with a concentration in composition. Although his studies encompassed clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, South Indian drumming, and piano, his emphasis has shifted steadily toward composition; he now realizes his albums through studio musicians and friends who translate his concepts into sound.
Beyond the four albums Ancient Mysteries, Bardo, Pangaea, and Ambient Origins, Bacchus joined Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, Patrick O'Hearn, and Vir Unis for the release The Ambient Expanse, which includes a five-movement collaborative work captured at Roach’s studio in Tucson, AZ. Music forms one strand of his broader multi-disciplinarian practice. He owns and runs the label Oasis Productions while earning recognition for his landscape photography, web designs, and 3-D computer programming.
